US Personal Care Regulation
Personal care products are used to maintain personal hygiene and enhance beauty¡ªthe broad category includes cosmetics; hair, nail, and skin care; and feminine and oral hygiene. Organic personal care products may be certified organic under the NSF/ANSI 305 or USDA Organic standards. Natural personal care products may be certified under the NPA Natural Seal, and within the next two years under the new NSF natural seal. Chemicals and irritants to avoid in personal care include 1,4-dioxane, parabens, salicylic acid, oxybenzone, talc, triclosan, and petroleum. Alternative natural personal care ingredients include Ayurvedic plants and herbs; beeswax; natural preservatives like citrus, rosemary, and vitamin E; fatty-acid rich oils; fruit extracts; and minerals.
