  • BEIJING, March 7 (Xinhuanet) --A largest and longest-running study of four widely used diets found that women who followed the low-carbohydrate Atkins diet lost more weight on average than those on three other popular diets and had no adverse health effects, U.S. media reported on Wednesday.

    The average weight reduction was small and participants started regaining pounds by the end of the one-year study, according to the study in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

    Although the results were modest, Atkins dieters experienced the largest drops in blood pressure and cholesterol, showing that even small amounts of weight loss can improve overall health, researchers said.

    The study by the Stanford University researchers compared the Atkins approach to three others: the standard low-fat, reduced calorie regimen long recommended by physicians and weight loss experts; the Zone, a reduced carbohydrate approach developed by author Barry Sears; and the very low-fat, high-carbohydrate regimen created by physician Dean Ornish.
